Formula Classic welcomes enthusiasts interested in
Rear Engine Racing & Sports car from 1960 up until the mid 80′s.
While Formula Classic is primarily for CAMS 5th Category log booked vehicles of the types outlined above, a decision made during a group meeting in late 2008 to organise ourselves in order to further redevelop this racing group. As a result we opted to drop the CAMS ‘formula alphabet’ approach of ‘M,O,P,Q,R’ and re-brand the whole class as ‘Formula Classic’. The W.A. CAMS racing panel approved this change towards the end of 2008.
As was the intention for 2009, being our first season as Formula Classic has enabled us to be more attractive in encouraging new drivers, it has simplified our involvement with the event promoter, primarily being the WASCC, made it far easier for the commentators to describe our class at race meetings & has also brought about re-newed public interest into the group.
Formula Classic also allows the cars the WA Sporting Car Club deam to be appropriate to be included within our ranks at each & every race meeting held at Barbagallo Raceway. These we include as the Invited Vehicles.
All of the cars you see in Formula Classic are the real thing. Every car actually competed in full competition in a particular period as noted on the drivers pages of this site. There are no reproduction vehicles.
Formula Classic will welcome anybody who is interested in the cars of this period, while our main focus is towards competition there are several members who prefer the more leisurely regularity trail runs.
On the competition front Formula Classic drivers can nominate to participate & compete for trophies in a handicap point score competition that covers all events entered during the racing year plus the regular season WASCC point score which is open to all the competing cars.
Formula Classic is the class name of the Historic Racing Accociation which is a primarily a sub group of members from the W.A. Sporting Car Club and with an affiliation of the Vintage Sports Car Club of WA. Our members consist of competitors, family, friends & pit crew. Currently the group has in excess of 50 members and grid numbers approaching 25 vehicles per meeting and growing.

The late fifties is where the rear engine revolution started and it was the sixties when in these early years that allowed for the first time home built specials which if designed well could compete and win with the noted marquee chassied cars. Some of these well know factory chassis of this period are Elfin, Renmax, of Australia plus Lotus, Lola & Repco Brabham of the U.K.
This was a time of high risk for drivers & some of the leading Australian names during this decade were Brabham, Geogheagan, Gardiner, …………….
By the 70′s the car design had progressed to wings & slick tyres & by the late 70′s & into the 80′s full ground effect aerodynamics were the norm.
